ZED Talk: Love Hate Theory

It's our first ZED Talk, a Zoetic original event focussed on creative growth and development... and of course fun! This talk is aimed at burgeoning amateurs and growth-driven professional musicians alike. It's an educational workshop, Zoetic-style.

Three Steps to understanding, and using, music theory by professional musician and instructor Nathan Fleet. Consider it Nathan's bag of tricks to help you write and understand music better and faster.

“Tools, not rules” is Nathan’s motto when it comes to learning about music theory. Music theory can be easy to learn and VERY creative, if you have the right teacher and tools.

Nathan has helped over 1,000,000 musicians worldwide with his easy to understand music lessons. Everything Nathan teaches, he will be able to show, by example, on stage using a piano, guitar and voice.

The video screen will be on so everyone in the audience will get that up-close view.

As an added bonus, everyone attending will get a free chord / scale chart. “The Chart” has been viewed over 1,000,000 times on YouTube and hundreds have been sold around the world.

You are encouraged to ask questions (there are no bad questions when you are learning) and please bring your instrument with you as it is often easier to relate these lessons when your instrument is right there. (We ask that you save your noodling for the breaks)

It's years of study packed into a 3-Hour session!

Sunday, May 27th
Tons of value for $35 per person (plus HST)

Hour 1
You DON'T have to learn to read music to understand theory
Every note in music (there are only 12)
What is the major scale and why is it so important
Chord / scale relationships

Learn and understand Modes
Understanding “Jazz” chords (chords that have 7s, 9s, 11s and 13s in the name)

Hour 2
Song writing with major and minor keys and chords
How to change key
How to harmonize any melody, in many different ways

Hour 3
Nathan will perform some original songs but will explain what theory is happening, but more importantly how YOU can do this with your own songs.

How to take a simple 3-Chord song and enhance it

POESY: Live in Concert

The Zoetic is proud to present POESY: Live in Concert. A winning artist from CTV's The Launch, POESY has been top 40 for eight weeks with "Soldier of Love" (which is also the promo song for TV's This Is Us). Not only is she an incredible musical talent, but she's also a hard-working inspiration, and we're honoured to bring POESY to Hamilton's Funky Vintage Theatre.

Between her mononymous name and her distinctive, powerful voice, there’s something truly mysterious about POESY.

After writing her first song at age 9, POESY has been making a name for herself on Canada's music scene, sharing the stage with acts such as Hollerado, Sloan, FeFe Dobson and Mother Mother. Her songwriting is inspired by literature, 1970s rock, thrift stores, and bus rides, while her sound and style is inspired by the likes of Freddie Mercury for his charisma, Stevie Nicks for her enchantment, Dolores O’Riordan for her power, and Kurt Cobain for his honest raw lyrics.

Get ready for a powerful night of music.

Friday, May 11 at 8pm
VIP Seating available for this event

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS: We're excited to create an opportunity for burgeoning new musicians with an open call for an Opening Act. Send us your audition video by April 27 and POESY will help us choose her opening performer!

Live Concert Celebration: Liteyears, Mike Maas, Wild Night

We're celebrating 90 years of entertainment in Hamilton with a rocking hometown concert by Liteyears, Mike Maas & The Late Night Lineup, and Wild Night. With open arms, this city has long embraced music and art of all styles, genres and mediums from artists of all walks of life and given them a voice. Since 1927, The Zoetic Theatre venue has given those voices the opportunity to be heard.

Come celebrate a favourite hometown venue and an amazing line-up of local artists on November 25th and help us prove why Hamilton is the best city in the world!

Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, LITEYEARS is a pop band on the rise that’s been quickly making a name for themselves on Canada’s national stage. Drawing from a diverse sonic palette ranging from cinematic orchestral arrangements reminiscent of a Hans Zimmer film score to the electronic sensibilities of modern pop music, LITEYEARS has created an honest representation of themselves and their musical tastes: high energy, anthemic alternative-pop with depth.

Led by Hamilton native and veteran singer-songwriter Mike Maas , Mike Maas & The Late Night Lineup is a confident pop rock blend of earthy acoustic and echoing ambient soundscapes. With Maas’ powerful and emotive voice at the forefront, the band’s infectious and masterfully-written ballads draw influence from the likes of Coldplay, U2 and The Beatles.

Wild Night hail from the smoke stacks of Hamilton, Ontario. They play rock and roll like their lives depend on it because, while they were growing up, they did. Carrying the echoes of their parents’ records, Wild Night are out to revive the heart and spirit of everything good that is gone.

Since 1927, The Zoetic Theatre has been a landmark on Hamilton Mountain offering everything from vaudeville to cinema to live performance. Alongside the theatre’s 90th anniversary, The Zoetic itself heads into its fifth year as an arts and entertainment organization. Join us for this live concert celebration!

Hamilton Film Festival: Scream For Me Sarajevo/PRISMIND

This night is all about the power and celebration of music, specifically Heavy Metal, as we journey back to 1994 when a live concert, by Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden's frontman), changed the lives of the town's people who struggled to simply feel human again during the seigein Sarajevo. This film deals with the impact of the seige, and a concert that almost didn't happen.

After the film we will celebrate with a local band performing their brand of Heavy Metal, with perhaps a few inspiring tunes related to the film!

Scream For Me Sarajevo is a documentary film about Sarajevo during the 1992-95 siege; specifically a film about the music scene in the besieged Bosnian capital with special focus on a concert held in the city's BKC music hall by Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) on December 14, 1994. It is a film about people who risked their lives to perform for the people who risked their lives in order to live them. Watch the trailer here

PRISMIND is a Canadian metal band based out of Hamilton, Ontario. Formed in2013, the group is known for its intricate guitar solos, amazing rhythm section and soaring vocals. HPO Movie Night: Romeo & Juliet

It's the return of HPO Movie Night at The Zoetic! A delightful partnership that combines movies and music into a fun and informative evening.

The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz Luhrmann to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. In this dazzling adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic love story, OSCAR® Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio stars opposite Claire Danes. They light up the screen as the original star-crossed lovers against a thumping soundtrack and a boldly imagined modern-day setting.

Pre-Film Feature: Enjoy a musical peek into how Shakespeare’s famous love story has been transformed into music with a mini-performance and demonstration of Russian composer Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite on the piano. HPO’s concert Romeo and Juliet is being performed at Hamilton Place on February 21 at 7:30pm.

The Vanguards of Music: Johnny Mac Slater, Brent Wirth, Mike Maas & The Late Night Line Up

Happy Birthday, Zoe! We're celebrating The Zoetic's first birthday with an exciting event that exemplifies our message for the year: Dream Big!

These are the voices of our generation. The singers and songwriters who live the words and breathe the music. They've made a name for themselves in Hamilton and beyond by working hard and being true to themselves. These are The Vanguards of Music and we're excited to have them perform on our stage!

Johnny Mac Slater is a singer-songwriter originally from the dust and the dirt of Norfolk County, Ontario. Weaving small town sensibility through his descriptive writing, Slater creates image driven verse that demands reflection and frames it with big memorable choruses that seal the deal.

Brent Wirth is the talented and hard-working lead from Thought Beneath Film. Tonight he brings his acoustic best with an energetic guitar-driven delivery.

Mike Maas & The Late Night Line Up is a confident pop rock blend of earthy acoustic and echoing epic soundscapes.
