The Door You Came In

Created and performed by
David Macfarlane and Douglas Cameron

The Door You Came In isn’t quite a play and it isn’t quite a concert.  It’s a musical story – sometimes funny, sometimes tragic – that tells the tales of family, and memory, and war.

A writer visits his dying mother.   He brings a book that he’d written twenty-five years ago to read to her.  It’s about her family.   But it’s also about the terrible battle – Beaumont Hamel – that sits at the heart of both Newfoundland’s and her family’s history.   So begins The Door You Came In -- a two-man performance based on David Macfarlane’s acclaimed memoir, The Danger Tree.

The songs and the music of The Door You Came In are Douglas Cameron’s department.  A seasoned, Juno-nominated singer and performer, Cameron plays banjola, mandolin, ukulele, and accordion.  His engaging, foot-tapping performance combines popular tunes of the day (“Pack Up Your Troubles,” and “If You Were the Only Girl in the World”) with original compositions.  Macfarlane’s narrative weaves seamlessly throughout the music.

Mighty Mateo's 3rd Annual Orange Crush

The Zoetic is pleased to support the fundraiser, Mighty Mateo's 3rd Annual Orange Crush, hosted by dear friends of the theatre.

On July 29, 2013, a young boy named Mateo was diagnosed with A.L.L. leukaemia. For the next 5 months he bravely fought this awful disease with courage and determination. Unfortunately along with the treatment comes many side effects and sadly due to those side effects Mateo lost his battle on January 2nd, 2014.

For all but a few days during that 5 months his parents Nickie and Justin lived at McMaster Children's Hospital and saw first hand that there are many unnecessary burdens families face on top of a child's diagnosis.

Since Mateo always wanted to help others, his parents started this fund in his honour to help alleviate some of those unnecessary burdens families face. 100% of the money raised goes to helping families with children battling cancer and other serious illnesses. Some examples of how they help are by bringing families meals, providing them with gift certificates, and even parking passes.

Please come out and join us for a night of laughs with comedian Arthur Simeon, great prizes and appetizers.

We hope to see you there!
