Live Concert Celebration: Liteyears, Mike Maas, Wild Night

We're celebrating 90 years of entertainment in Hamilton with a rocking hometown concert by Liteyears, Mike Maas & The Late Night Lineup, and Wild Night. With open arms, this city has long embraced music and art of all styles, genres and mediums from artists of all walks of life and given them a voice. Since 1927, The Zoetic Theatre venue has given those voices the opportunity to be heard.

Come celebrate a favourite hometown venue and an amazing line-up of local artists on November 25th and help us prove why Hamilton is the best city in the world!

Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, LITEYEARS is a pop band on the rise that’s been quickly making a name for themselves on Canada’s national stage. Drawing from a diverse sonic palette ranging from cinematic orchestral arrangements reminiscent of a Hans Zimmer film score to the electronic sensibilities of modern pop music, LITEYEARS has created an honest representation of themselves and their musical tastes: high energy, anthemic alternative-pop with depth.

Led by Hamilton native and veteran singer-songwriter Mike Maas , Mike Maas & The Late Night Lineup is a confident pop rock blend of earthy acoustic and echoing ambient soundscapes. With Maas’ powerful and emotive voice at the forefront, the band’s infectious and masterfully-written ballads draw influence from the likes of Coldplay, U2 and The Beatles.

Wild Night hail from the smoke stacks of Hamilton, Ontario. They play rock and roll like their lives depend on it because, while they were growing up, they did. Carrying the echoes of their parents’ records, Wild Night are out to revive the heart and spirit of everything good that is gone.

Since 1927, The Zoetic Theatre has been a landmark on Hamilton Mountain offering everything from vaudeville to cinema to live performance. Alongside the theatre’s 90th anniversary, The Zoetic itself heads into its fifth year as an arts and entertainment organization. Join us for this live concert celebration!

Hamilton Film Festival: Rust and Bone & Author Craig Davidson

rust and bone.jpg

Presented by GritLit and the Hamilton Film Festival

It all begins in the North of France. Ali suddenly finds himself with a five year-old child on his hands. Sam is his son, but he hardly knows him. Homeless, penniless and friendless, Ali takes refuge with his sister in Antibes. There things improve immediately. She puts them up in her garage, she takes the child under her wing and the weather is glorious. Ali first runs into Stephanie during a night club brawl. He drives her home and leaves her his phone number. He is poor, she is beautiful and self-assured, a princess: his complete opposite. Stephanie trains killer whales at Marineland. When a performance ends in tragedy, a call in the night again brings them together. When Ali sees her next, his princess is confined to a wheel chair: she has lost her legs and quite a few illusions. He simply helps her, with no compassion or pity. And she comes alive again.

Craig Davidson will be available for a Q&A and will be selling and signing his new book, Precious Cargo. CRAIG DAVIDSON was born and grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, near Niagara Falls. He has published three previous books of literary fiction: Rust and Bone, which was made into an Oscar-nominated feature film of the same name, The Fighter, and Sarah Court. Davidson is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and his articles and journalism have been published in the National Post, Esquire, GQ, The Walrus, and The Washington Post, among other places. He lives in Toronto, Canada, with his partner and their child.

Hamilton Film Festival: Scream For Me Sarajevo/PRISMIND

This night is all about the power and celebration of music, specifically Heavy Metal, as we journey back to 1994 when a live concert, by Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden's frontman), changed the lives of the town's people who struggled to simply feel human again during the seigein Sarajevo. It is a film about people who risked their lives to perform for the people who risked their lives in order to live them. Watch the trailer here

Hamilton Film Festival: That Never Happened

THAT NEVER HAPPENED (Ryan Boyko / Documentary / Hamilton / 75min) reveals the story of Canada’s first national internment operations between 1914 - 1920, when over 88,000 people were forced to register and more than 8,500 were wrongfully imprisoned in concentration camps across Canada, not for anything they had done but because of where they came from. In 1954, the public records were destroyed and in the 1980s a few brave men and women began working to reclaim this chapter in history and ensure future generations would know about it. TRAILER

The Door You Came In

Created and performed by
David Macfarlane and Douglas Cameron

The Door You Came In isn’t quite a play and it isn’t quite a concert.  It’s a musical story – sometimes funny, sometimes tragic – that tells the tales of family, and memory, and war.

A writer visits his dying mother.   He brings a book that he’d written twenty-five years ago to read to her.  It’s about her family.   But it’s also about the terrible battle – Beaumont Hamel – that sits at the heart of both Newfoundland’s and her family’s history.   So begins The Door You Came In -- a two-man performance based on David Macfarlane’s acclaimed memoir, The Danger Tree.

The songs and the music of The Door You Came In are Douglas Cameron’s department.  A seasoned, Juno-nominated singer and performer, Cameron plays banjola, mandolin, ukulele, and accordion.  His engaging, foot-tapping performance combines popular tunes of the day (“Pack Up Your Troubles,” and “If You Were the Only Girl in the World”) with original compositions.  Macfarlane’s narrative weaves seamlessly throughout the music.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Our Spring Fling continues! And it's about to get very daring!

The antici...pation was killing us. We just couldn't wait until October so we're popping up with an exactly-half-way-through-the-year screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show! We're even prepping a prop bag for you, so you can get the full experience. Plus, we're stirring up a Signature Drink with your name on it from our licensed snack bar. Get dressed up and make it count!

You know you want to! "Let's do the time warp again!" As always, singing encouraged.

About the film: Newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, encounter car trouble on a rainy night. When they stop to ask for help, they find themselves in a bizarre place! It's the castle of a charming transvestite, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. They are offered shelter for the night, but will they want to stay?

Annie Sing-Along!

A sing-along for the whole family! It's the original Annie movie done Zoetic-style, with lyrics on screen, prop bags, costume contest, face-painting, and most importantly - you singing! If you haven't experienced one of our sing-alongs, it's quite a feeling singing along with 300 other people!

ANNIE is the story of a plucky, red-haired girl who dreams of life outside her dreary orphanage. One day, Annie (Aileen Quinn) is chosen to stay for one week with the famous billionaire "Daddy" Warbucks (Albert Finney). One week turns into many and the only person standing in the way of Annie's fun is Miss Hannigan, the gin-soaked ruler of the orphanage (played to hilarious perfection by Carol Burnett). Will Miss Hannigan's zany attempts to kidnap the irrepressible Annie succeed?

Join in for unforgettable songs, including "It's A Hard Knock Life" and "Tomorrow."
